An Australian Patrol Boat was experiencing significant scaling issues in its onboard sewage system, with pipework becoming approximately 70% blocked within 12 months.
A Defence-approved contractor used ActiveEco SX Descaler to flush the system in situ, helping remove scale build-up without dismantling and replacing pipework.
The result was a faster, more cost-effective maintenance outcome that allowed the vessel to return to service promptly.
The Situation
The crew of an Australian Patrol Boat contacted a Defence-approved contractor after experiencing recurring scale build-up in the vessel’s onboard sewage system.
Within 12 months, sections of the pipework had become approximately 70% blocked, affecting system performance and creating a maintenance issue that required urgent attention.
For an operational vessel, this type of blockage can quickly affect availability, increase maintenance downtime and place additional pressure on sustainment resources.
The Challenge
Australian Armidale-class Patrol Boats are used for operational duties including border protection, fisheries patrols and interception activities.
The crew needed a descaling method that could remove significant scale build-up from the sewage system without dismantling and replacing affected pipework.
The maintenance approach needed to be practical, cost-effective and capable of supporting a prompt return to service.
The Solution
A Defence-approved contractor flushed the sewage system using ActiveEco SX Descaler.
ActiveEco SX Descaler was selected for its ability to dissolve scale build-up within pipework and support in-situ cleaning. Rather than removing and replacing affected sections, the contractor was able to circulate the descaler through the system to break down internal scale deposits.
This approach provided a practical method for restoring flow through the sewage system while reducing the need for invasive mechanical works.

The Outcome
The in-situ flushing procedure successfully addressed the blockage issue and helped restore the sewage system to serviceable condition.
By using ActiveEco SX Descaler, Defence was able to reduce sustainment costs by avoiding the need to dismantle and replace pipework. The Patrol Boat was able to return to service promptly and continue its operational duties without extended delay.
The procedure has since become a standard work pack activity, supporting a more efficient maintenance approach for managing sewage system scale build-up.
