Scaling Back the Problem: Revitalising Sydney’s M4 Tunnel Drainage System with Envirofluid

Beneath this vital infrastructure lies a drainage system that quietly keeps groundwater at bay, safeguarding the tunnel’s structural integrity. However, by late 2024, this essential system faced a significant challenge—scale buildup.

Sydney’s M4 Tunnel is a cornerstone of the city’s transport network, carrying commuters and cargo through one of the busiest corridors in the region. Beneath this vital infrastructure lies a drainage system that quietly keeps groundwater at bay, safeguarding the tunnel’s structural integrity. However, by late 2024, this essential system faced a significant challenge—scale buildup.

Years of mineral deposits from groundwater had accumulated within the system’s rising main and pumps, slashing its flow rate to just 21.33 m³/h, far below the original design capacity of 60 m³/h. The risk of flooding was increasing, and the strain on critical components threatened the system’s long-term functionality. Faced with these challenges, Fulton Hogan, the operator of the drainage system, turned to Envirofluid for an innovative and sustainable solution.

The Operation and Results

Envirofluid’s team arrived with a clear objective: to restore the M4 Tunnel drainage system’s capacity while prioritising environmental sustainability. At the heart of their approach was Triple7 Eco-Scale Plus, a biodegradable, non-corrosive descaling agent designed to dissolve stubborn mineral deposits without damaging infrastructure or harming the environment.

Over a focused four-day operation in November 2024, Envirofluid targeted the system’s 1200-metre rising main and two groundwater pumps. The challenges were complex, including high groundwater ingress and the system’s demanding 400 kPa pressure requirements, which necessitated precise handling. Some aging components, such as check valves and the rising main shut-off valve, were also replaced to ensure optimal performance.

The results were remarkable. Over the course of the operation, the flow rate steadily improved, culminating in a post-treatment measurement of 40.00 m³/h—a dramatic 87.5% increase. This restoration brought the system significantly closer to its original capacity, ensuring it could efficiently manage groundwater and mitigate flooding risks. The improved performance also reduced strain on the infrastructure, extending its lifespan and enhancing overall reliability.

A Sustainable Future for Sydney’s Infrastructure

The success of this project highlights the importance of proactive maintenance, innovative solutions, and environmental stewardship in managing critical infrastructure. By choosing Triple7 Eco-Scale Plus, Envirofluid not only solved the immediate problem of scale buildup but also ensured the process was environmentally friendly, with treated effluent safely disposed of at Cintra Park’s treatment facility.

For Fulton Hogan, the collaboration with Envirofluid restored the functionality of a critical system and reinforced their commitment to sustainable operations. For Sydney’s M4 Tunnel, it marked a significant step toward ensuring the reliability of the city’s transport network for years to come.

As cities like Sydney grow, infrastructure demands will continue to rise. Projects like this demonstrate that operational efficiency and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand, providing a blueprint for addressing future challenges. The partnership between Envirofluid and Fulton Hogan didn’t just fix a problem—it set the stage for a more sustainable and resilient future.
