Starting 1 July 2025, Australia will officially ban the manufacture, import, export, and use of certain PFAS chemicals, including PFOS, PFOA, and PFHxS. This landmark regulation marks a major shift in chemical safety and environmental responsibility and it’s something all industries need to be prepared for.
What Are PFAS Chemicals?
PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of human-made chemicals known for their resistance to water, oil, heat, and stains. Commonly referred to as “forever chemicals”, PFAS are persistent in the environment and have been linked to serious health and ecological risks.
PFAS are often found in:
- Cleaning products and antifoams
- Aerosol cans and specialty paints
- Firefighting foams (AFFF)
- Industrial coatings and finishes
- Non-stick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, and waterproof clothing
Their widespread use across sectors like manufacturing, mining, transport, Defence, aviation, and facilities maintenance makes this ban particularly significant.
What’s Changing from 1 July?
The Australian Government will prohibit the import, manufacture, and use of the following PFAS chemicals:
- PFOS (CAS 763-23-1)
- PFOA (CAS 335-67-1)
- PFHxS (CAS 355-46-4)
Industries that currently rely on these chemicals will need to review their products and transition to compliant alternatives — quickly.
Where PFAS Might Be Hiding
Even if your business doesn’t knowingly use PFAS, they can be hidden in:
- Industrial cleaning products
- Graffiti-resistant or marine-grade paints
- Antifoaming agents
- Powder coatings
- Certain aerosol or spray formulations
You should check SDSs and chemical inventories to ensure you are compliant ahead of the deadline.
