Bare soil rarely stays in place for long.
Once a site loses its vegetation, rain can wash fine soil down a slope. Wind can lift loose dust, while heat can dry the surface before new plants have time to grow.
On a small area, a team may manage these problems by hand. However, large batters, embankments and mine rehabilitation areas need a faster and more practical approach.
That is where hydromulching can help.
Hydromulching sprays a mixture of water, mulch fibre, binder and selected additives over bare or disturbed soil. The mixture forms a protective layer that helps control erosion, hold moisture and support new plant growth.
It can also reach steep or difficult areas that would take much longer to treat by hand.
What is hydromulching?
Hydromulching uses specialised equipment to spray a water-based mixture over prepared ground.
Most mixtures contain:
- Water
- Mulch fibre
- A binder or tackifier
- Tracking dye
Depending on the project, the contractor may also add seed, fertiliser, soil conditioners or water-holding materials.
Once the mixture lands, the mulch covers the soil. Meanwhile, the binder helps the fibres stay together and make contact with the surface. Where the mixture contains seed, the mulch also gives it some protection while it begins to grow.
Civil construction, mining, infrastructure and land rehabilitation projects often use hydromulching to treat large areas of exposed ground.

How does hydromulching work?
1. Assess and prepare the site
First, the contractor checks the soil, slope, drainage and expected weather. The team may also remove weeds, rocks, debris and loose material from the surface.
Hard or compacted soil may need ripping, roughening or track-walking. These steps create a textured surface that helps the mixture grip the ground. Without this preparation, the mulch may sit loosely on top of the soil.
Hydromulching cannot fix deeply compacted, unstable or unsuitable ground by itself. Therefore, the team must deal with those issues before application.
2. Mix the slurry
Next, the operator loads water into the hydromulching machine. The operator then adds mulch fibre, binder and any selected seed or additives. An agitation system keeps the mixture moving inside the tank.
Good mixing creates an even slurry. It also reduces settling, blocked hoses and patchy coverage.
3. Spray the surface
The operator pumps the mixture through a hose or application cannon. A hose gives the operator more control at close range. A cannon, on the other hand, can cover wider areas and reach steep ground from a safer position.
Tracking dye gives the mixture its familiar green colour. It shows the operator which areas already have enough coverage and where gaps remain. The colour fades over time as weather and new plant growth change the surface.
4. Form the protective layer
Finally, the fibres settle over the soil.
As the water drains or dries, the binder helps the mulch stay together and hold against the surface. This layer can:
- Reduce the direct impact of rain
- Slow the movement of loose soil
- Hold moisture near the surface
- Protect seed during early growth
Over time, plant roots or another long-term control method take over the job of holding the soil in place.

What are the benefits of hydromulching?
– It protects exposed soil
The mulch shields the surface from direct rainfall and helps reduce the movement of fine soil. This benefit matters most after earthworks, when the ground has little or no natural cover.
– It helps retain moisture
Mulch slows evaporation and keeps moisture closer to the upper soil layer. As a result, seed may have a better environment for early growth when the site receives enough rain or irrigation.
– It covers large areas efficiently
Hydromulching can treat large areas faster than many hand-applied methods. It can also spread the mixture more evenly across uneven ground.
– It reaches difficult areas
Hoses and cannons can reach:
- Steep batters
- Embankments
- Stockpiles
- Cut-and-fill slopes
- Large rehabilitation areas
This can also reduce the need for workers to walk across unstable or hard-to-reach ground.
– It supports revegetation
A single application can spread seed, mulch, binder and selected additives across the site. The mulch then protects the surface while new plants begin to grow.
– It may reduce surface dust
Hydromulching covers and binds loose soil. Therefore, it may reduce windblown dust on exposed or rehabilitated areas. However, it does not replace a purpose-designed dust suppressant on active roads or heavily trafficked surfaces.
Where do projects use hydromulching?
Projects commonly use hydromulching on:
- Civil construction batters
- Road and rail corridors
- Mine rehabilitation areas
- Embankments
- Utility corridors
- Dam walls
- Soil stockpiles
- Landfill sites
- Drainage areas
- Government or Defence land
- Large landscaping projects
It works particularly well where turf, hand-seeding or manually spreading mulch would take too much time or expose workers to difficult terrain.
When might hydromulching not be enough?
Hydromulching protects the surface, but it cannot solve every soil or drainage problem.
For example, it may not provide enough protection where:
- The soil has severe compaction
- The slope remains unstable
- Concentrated water crosses the site
- Drainage sends water over the treated area
- The soil cannot support plant growth
- Vehicles regularly use the surface
- The slope needs physical reinforcement
- The project cannot provide irrigation or maintenance
High-flow areas may need rock protection, check structures, erosion blankets or reinforcement mats. Likewise, poor soil may need compost, conditioning or new growing material before hydromulching begins. In other words, a stronger mixture cannot make up for poor ground preparation or unmanaged water flow.
Good hydromulching starts with the ground
Hydromulching offers a practical way to protect bare soil, support revegetation and treat large or difficult areas. However, the green surface only shows part of the job.
The team must prepare the soil, choose a suitable fibre and binder, and consider rainfall, drainage and ongoing care. When these elements work together, hydromulching can protect disturbed ground while vegetation begins the longer-term work of stabilising the site.
